Use WFH Diary on two Macs

Short answerInstall WFH Diary on each Mac, sign in to the same Apple Account, and leave Sync data across my devices on in Settings, Privacy. Sessions from both Macs come together in one diary, and time when both were in use at once is counted once. Use Restore Purchases to unlock Pro on the second Mac.

How syncing between Macs works

WFH Diary syncs your records through your private iCloud, so every Mac signed in to the same Apple Account shows the same diary. Each Mac records its own sessions, and the diary puts them together.

If both Macs were in use at the same time, for example a laptop and a desktop side by side, the overlapping time is counted once. Your total is never doubled.

Set up the second Mac

  1. Install WFH Diary from the Mac App Store on the second Mac.
  2. Make sure both Macs are signed in to the same Apple Account, with iCloud turned on.
  3. Open WFH Diary and finish the short welcome steps.
  4. Click the menu bar icon, then the gear button to open Settings.
  5. Go to Privacy and check that Sync data across my devices is on. Do the same on the first Mac.

Give iCloud a few minutes to bring your existing records across. They then appear in Review, Week and Year on both Macs.

Unlock Pro on the second Mac

You don’t need to buy Pro twice.

  1. On the second Mac, open Settings and go to the Pro tab.
  2. Click Restore Purchases.

This works on any Mac signed in to the same Apple Account you bought Pro with.

What you’ll see in the diary

Each session shows the name of the Mac that recorded it when you open a block on the Day screen. A weekday with nothing tracked on either Mac shows in Review as “no activity on any device”.

You confirm each day once, on either Mac. Your answers sync too.

Things that stay on one Mac

  • Pause applies only to the Mac you paused. The other keeps tracking.
  • Open at login is set on each Mac separately.

If you’d rather keep a Mac separate

Turn off Sync data across my devices in Settings, Privacy on that Mac. Its records then stay on that Mac only. WFH Diary needs a restart for the change to take effect.

If one Mac belongs to your employer, check whether you’re allowed to install apps on it. You only need WFH Diary on the Macs you use when working from home.
