Short answerOur guides explain the ATO’s rules for working from home in plain English. Every rule links to the ATO page or ruling it comes from. We update guides when the ATO changes something and at the start of each tax year, and we correct mistakes as soon as we know about them.

Where our information comes from

We use primary sources first: the ATO website, Practical Compliance Guideline PCG 2023/1, and legislation. Where we rely on anything else, we link it. If sources disagree, we say so and go with the ATO.

How we write

  • Each guide starts with a short answer, then the detail.
  • We state what the rules are, not what you should claim. Your situation may differ, and we tell you when to ask the ATO or a registered tax agent.
  • We never say or imply that the ATO approves WFH Diary or any app. The ATO doesn’t approve record-keeping apps.
  • When a guide mentions WFH Diary, it’s because the app is relevant to the problem. We say what it can’t do, too.

Keeping guides current

Each guide shows the tax year it’s written for and the date it was last updated. We review every guide when the ATO announces a change to the fixed rate, record-keeping rules or deductions, and again before each tax time in July.

Review

Guides are written and checked by the WFH Diary team against the sources listed on each page. They are not personal tax advice and haven’t been reviewed for your circumstances.

Corrections

If you find an error, email support@wfhdiary.com. We fix confirmed errors promptly and update the page’s date.

Independence

WFH Diary is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Australian Taxation Office. We don’t accept payment to mention or rank other products. Where we compare apps, we include ones that compete with ours, including the ATO’s own free myDeductions tool.
